Week 2 – Care Less What They Think

People will often attempt to use you to validate their worthiness.  It’s up to us whether they’re successful or notEdward Muhammad

We’re all guilty to some degree or another. Every day from the moment we wake up, we live our lives caring what other people think of us. Some care less, some care more, but I think most would agree that we tend to place some level of value on what others think.  Particularly in this world of “likes” and “follow me”, we have become a society that places inordinate value on what others think.  We accept the status quo for what it is because everyone around us does. We tip toe our way through life by doing things in order to please others, not because it’s what we believe in. Eventually our actions, appearances, and lives become molded by how we think other people perceive us. How are these pants going to make me look? What will my colleagues think if I speak out? Are those people talking behind my back? If I take this job, what will my friends and family think of me?  How’s my mom or dad going to react when they see this? And on, and on.

We’ve been conditioned mainly starting with our parents to care more about what others think more than what we think.  We’ve been trained to trust other people’s perception and guidance over our own inner compass.

I realize this line of thinking might sound somewhat callous, but STOP CARING WHAT OTHERS THINK ABOUT YOU!  The bottom line fact is if you care about being in alignment, you can not allow other people’s opinions about you matter more than what you think about yourself.  It is not your job to make anyone else happy! And it’s nobody’s job to make you happy.  It’s your job to keep yourself in balance and in alignment.  Nobody can love you into your own alignment. Nobody can care for you into alignment.  Your own practiced thoughts are what keep you in alignment.  Caring more about how you feel – your alignment with your inner being trumps everything else!

What you think of me is none of my business! You can’t control the way anyone else receives you or perceives you.  You can only control your own perception of yourself and the way you INTEND to represent yourself.  It really doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks about you.  It only matters what YOU think about you. What others think about you is about THEIR alignment with their Source. You must be willing to let people think whatever they want to think about anything- even about YOU! This goes even for those you love most. As a matter of fact, this goes especially for those you love most, because it’s these loved ones that potentially have the greatest impact on your life, in terms of their opinion about you.

Of course this shouldn’t mean that you completely disregard the thoughts, feelings, and opinions of those that matter most to you.  But what it does mean is you can’t let the way anyone else feels about you outweigh the way you feel about yourself and your own personal alignment.  People, well-meaning people, even family, will often attempt to use you to validate their worthiness.  It’s up to you whether they’re successful or not.

So how do you begin to care less about what others think?

  • First off, know that it’s a process. And you probably won’t jump from caring a lot to not giving a rip.
  • Second, also know that it’s more about self-love than it is about caring less about what others think.  It’s about valuing your own inner being and honoring the divine guidance we all have within.
  • And lastly, in any given situation where someone is attempting to impart or project what they think about you onto you- remember- YOU HAVE A CHOICE.  What they think about you is really none of your business.  You are not trying to measure up to their thoughts of you! So you can decide for yourself whether or not you are in agreement with that perception or not.  You can choose to dismiss it or hold onto that which resonates with you and make changes as YOU see fit.

Each of us can stay in alignment and live from that place of love and appreciation.  What others think of us is never, ever our business.
