Week 25 – Square Pegs and Round Holes

“Don’t let the noise of other’s opinions drown out your own inner voice.  And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition.  They somehow already know what you truly want to become.  Everything else is secondary” – Steve Jobs

This past week I had a bit of a challenge on my job.  I won’t go into detail but suffice to say, I was extremely upset, frustrated and downright angry.  There’s no bar set higher for me than myself.  The passion I feel for what I do holds me accountable for delivering excellent results.  And when this is questioned, I sometimes take offense.  This is something I wrestle with on this journey of Alignment and Enlightenment.  So as I left my office on Friday afternoon, angry, frustrated and OUT of alignment, I had to quickly do a self-assessment and decide HOW I wanted to feel next.  As we’ve stated many times on Align to Enlighten, the ONLY thing we control is how we FEEL.  And the Creator has given us the ability to create the next moment in which we live.  So I began to self-assess and decide my next steps to the feelings in which I desired to have on Friday evening.  Decided to create my next moment.

As I pulled myself back into alignment I quickly realized and had to laugh to myself when the light bulb went off in my head that said, “every human is living an experience that is unique to THAT human!”  Therefore, everyone’s experience is the authentic experience to THAT person.  So when we think our loved ones, friends or bosses are making “bad” decisions, they are acting on what THEY feel is right to THEM.  And that’s okay.  But the challenge, especially in the work environment, is we are relegated to assimilation for the sake of harmony and/or fear of the authority making those business decisions about our careers.  So we jam ourselves into the round holes.

We live in a world where we are expected to assimilate and adapt to our environment.  Kids with peer pressure at school.  Laughing at that offensive joke told at the company cocktail hour with everyone else even though you were horrified.  Women in Corporate America where the Good-Ole-Boys Club runs rampant…we are forced many times to take our “square” selves and squeeze into the “round holes” of our environment or situation.  At least it may FEEL like that to us from time to time.  So, in my situation at work on Friday, I had reached a breaking point of being hammered into the round holes of my environment and I wanted desperately to escape that environment simply to be allowed to be my regular “square” self.  What I came to understand is…I didn’t and don’t need to do either.  I don’t need to “assimilate” to the round holes of my environment and I don’t need to “escape” the environment either.  I simply need to BE.  I simply need to BE who I am authentically.  That is all.

Knowing that every human is experiencing life uniquely to themselves offers an open understanding of acceptance and allowance for that human.  Losing judgment of that person’s life experience also allows me as an individual to operate freely without expectation of that person’s behavior.  And it offers peace in that understanding, free of conflict.  So when decisions are made that are above my pay grade or out of my decision making powers that I fundamentally disagree with or am vehemently opposed to, I don’t have to assimilate or escape…I can simply BE.

How many times during your work week do you wish you could be somewhere other than where you are?  How many times do you wish you could follow your heart, your intuition, your dreams?  And then, what excuses do you provide yourself as to why you can’t?  I was inspired by my cousins’ writing last week about “Feeling Your Alignment.”  Feeling your alignment!  We, often times, pay acute attention to our 5 senses of sight, touch, smell, taste and hearing, while ignoring how we truly FEEL.  Our heart.  Our intuition.  That inner voice.  These are the subtle urgings of your soul.  The authentic you.

As I struggled this past week at work I came to realize on Friday that I’M not the crazy one because I don’t fit into the round hole.  But perhaps I’m a puzzle piece on the wrong puzzle board!  To quote Steve Jobs, “Don’t let the noise of other’s opinions drown out your own inner voice.  And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition.  They somehow already know what you truly want to become.  Everything else is secondary”

We have intuition for a reason.  The frustration and anger I felt on Friday was primarily because I was out of alignment with myself.  That is very clear to me.  But in addition, I have to ask myself, “are you also frustrated and angry because you are looking to assimilate to something you are not?”  Because if that is the case, as it is with many of us, we are asking our souls to adapt to something we are not.  As my grandmother used to say, “a clown only wears makeup for so long.”  In other words,  sooner or later you have to be the real you.  Anything other than that brings on frustration, angst, worry and anger.  It’s similar to rubbing a cat the wrong way.  It’s simply not comfortable.  And we all have every right to be comfortable.  Comfortable in who we are as opposed to something someone is trying to make us out to be.

As I continued my evaluation of myself and read the quote from Steve Jobs, I also quickly realized, “I AM exercising courage to follow my heart and intuition!”  My cousin and I absolutely LOVE Align to Enlighten and EVERYTHING it stands for and represents!  Spiritual empowerment, alignment with your soul which is the authentic you, peace, joy, happiness, tranquility, the ability to manifest desire and create environments without question…enlightenment.  I momentarily lost sight of what is primary in my life versus what is secondary in my life and thus received all of the frustration, angst, worry and anger because I was looking to assimilate to something I am not!  THAT is why I felt those feelings that were fueled by my own resistance to them.  I allowed the ‘opinions of others to drown out my own inner voice.’

As you strike out on this week, pay close attention to yourself.  Work to operate from a space of authenticity at all times.  Follow your heart, listen to your intuition and align with your soul.  And remember…we are spiritual beings FIRST, having a human experience SECOND.  That intuition is your soul attempting to direct you down a road of joy, happiness and bliss.  Your soul is boundless and can’t be molded or shaped into anyone’s square peg and is not meant to fit into a round hole.  Your soul is meant to be free of limits and immune to boundary.  Find freedom in the authentic you.  Namaste
